Your photos have hidden superpowers

Every photo from a real camera carries the exact moment, the place, and the camera inside it. What EXIF data is in plain English, why screenshots and social downloads lost theirs, and how to check yours in ten seconds.
You have a photo on your computer named IMG_4372.jpg. As names go, it is not helpful. It does not say the year, or the trip, or whose birthday that was. Thousands of your photos are named like this, which is a big part of why "organize the photos" feels impossible.
Here is the good news, and it is genuinely good: that file knows exactly when it was born. Down to the second. Very possibly down to the meter.
The notebook inside your photos
When a camera or a phone takes a picture, it does not just save the image. It quietly writes a little notebook inside the file. Photographers call it EXIF data — the acronym stands for something you are free to forget — and for ordinary people it holds three treasures.
The exact moment. Not "sometime in 2019." July 4, 2019, 6:42:11 PM. Every photo from a real camera carries its own timestamp, which means a decade of photos can put itself in order without you remembering anything.
The place. Phones record GPS coordinates precise enough to point at the actual park bench. "Where were we?" has been answered inside the file all along.
The camera. The make, the model, the lens, and the settings — aperture, shutter speed, ISO. This is how you can tell, years later, that one batch came from Grandpa's Canon and another from your first iPhone.
The notebook travels with the original file wherever it is copied. Which is exactly why it hurts so much when it goes missing.
The heartbreak of the stripped copy
Not every photo kept its notebook, and the ones that lost it lost it in predictable ways.
Photos downloaded from social media. When you post a photo, the platform strips the notebook out — partly for your privacy, partly out of habit. So the wedding photo you re-downloaded from Facebook after your laptop died looks fine, but it knows nothing. No date, no place, no camera. It has amnesia.
Screenshots. A screenshot never had a notebook, because no camera took it. It is a picture of your screen, born knowing only the day you pressed the buttons.
Messaging apps and edits. Many chat apps recompress photos and drop the notebook along the way. So do some editing tools when they export a copy.
Here is the cruel pattern in family archives: the copy that survived is so often the stripped one. The original lived on a phone that got lost; the Facebook download lives on. Multiply that by a few hundred photos and you get the classic dateless jumble — a folder of memories with no order and no answers. It is the single best argument for finding and keeping your originals, and for cataloging them before the next laptop dies.
The flip side: sometimes the notebook says too much
There is a privacy angle worth knowing. If a photo still has its GPS data, then anyone you send the original file to can read exactly where it was taken — including, say, your kitchen. Social platforms strip this before showing your post to the world, but a photo you text or email usually arrives with everything intact. Before you send a stranger a photo of the dresser you are selling, it is worth knowing whether the file also includes your home address in latitude and longitude.
None of this is a reason to panic. It is a reason to be able to look.
Check one right now

What I do with all of this
Checking photos one at a time is fun for about three photos. My actual job is doing it for everything you have, automatically, the moment a file arrives.
Every photo you add gets fingerprinted and read. The dates from the notebooks become your timeline — your library sorts itself by when life actually happened, not by when files were copied. GPS coordinates become places you can answer questions about. If a photo already carries keywords — some cameras and old photo tools wrote them in years ago — those become searchable tags on their own, a head start you did not have to earn.
And when a file has no notebook at all, I do not just leave a blank. I fall back on the file's own modified date, mark it honestly as a guess, and then ask you: the file says March 3, 2019 — is that right? One click to confirm, or type the real date, and "roughly is fine" is the house rule. Your answer always outranks anything a file claims — a date you confirmed counts for more in an item's fidelity score than a date I merely found. When several shots look like the same moment, I ask once and label them all together.
One promise underneath all of it: I read the notebook, I never rewrite it. Your original files stay byte-for-byte exactly as they were — that is what makes a fingerprint a fingerprint.
